Six days from now, the United States will mark 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Communities across the country are already in final preparations for what is shaping up to be one of the largest July 4 celebrations in the nation’s history.

The 250th anniversary — officially called the Semiquincentennial — has been in planning for years. From New York to Los Angeles, Philadelphia to small towns in every state, fireworks shows, parades, and public events are being staged on a scale that exceeds a typical Independence Day.
What Makes This Year Different
America’s centennial in 1876 was marked with the first World’s Fair held on US soil, in Philadelphia. The bicentennial in 1976 brought tall ships to New York Harbor and celebrations that are still referenced in American cultural memory. The 250th is being approached with similar ambition.
CBS News is airing a two-hour special called “These United States: America at 250” on Sunday, June 28, offering a preview of the week’s events and reflections from across the country on what the milestone means in 2026.
Philadelphia as the Centre
The city where the Declaration of Independence was signed is hosting the largest official federal celebration. Events are planned across multiple days in and around Independence Hall and the National Mall equivalent in the city. The National Park Service has been coordinating with Philadelphia officials for months on crowd management and ceremony logistics.
Washington DC will also host significant events on the Mall, with fireworks expected to be visible from Virginia and Maryland.
A Country Marking the Moment
The 250th arrives at a moment of considerable political division in the United States. Supporters and critics of the current administration are both participating in the celebrations in different ways. The day itself tends to bring out something that’s harder to find in ordinary political life: a shared public ritual that most Americans still observe, whatever they think of the direction the country is heading.
Whether the celebrations produce any of the unity that organisers hope for is something the week will answer.
July 4, 2026 marks 250 years since the United States declared independence from Britain on July 4, 1776.
