Android 17 Bubbles Multitasking: Floating App Windows

By Sibbir OsmanJuly 21, 20262 Mins Read

Android 17 introduces bubbles, a floating-window multitasking feature that transforms app usage on mobile phones. Users can long-press any app icon, open it in a compact floating window, then collapse it into a movable bubble when not actively using it.

The stable release launched on June 16, 2026, with rollout to Google Pixel phones first, followed by other eligible Android devices throughout 2026. Up to five apps can be displayed as bubbles simultaneously, freely positioned across the home screen.

Google Rolls Out Android 17

How Bubbles Work

The interface is straightforward. Long-press an app icon, open the app, then minimize it into a bubble. Tap the bubble to reopen it. The window persists while you’re using other apps, enabling seamless context-switching without losing your place in the app.

On larger screens, bubbles dock in a dedicated bubble bar at the bottom, similar to desktop operating systems. This design bridges the mobile-desktop gap, offering power users a familiar multitasking environment.

Productivity Gains

For professionals, developers, and multitasking enthusiasts, bubbles unlock productivity workflows previously impossible on mobile. Running a video call, referencing notes, checking messages, and browsing the web simultaneously becomes practical.

The feature mirrors capabilities on iPad and desktop operating systems, finally bringing feature parity to Android phones that many users have awaited.

Broader Android 17 Improvements

Beyond bubbles, Android 17 includes enhancements to security, battery management, and AI integration. Google’s focus on on-device AI processing improves privacy and responsiveness.

The rollout prioritizes Pixel phones, but Samsung, OnePlus, and other major manufacturers are expected to adopt the bubbles feature quickly, making it a standard multitasking paradigm across Android.

Android 17 bubbles finally prove that smartphones can match laptop multitasking efficiency when designed thoughtfully.
