Japan’s animation industry has achieved a historic financial milestone. The sector reached a record $25 billion in revenue for 2024. This represents a massive 14.8 percent surge from the previous year.

Anime Industry Record

The Association of Japanese Animations (AJA) confirmed the figures this week. The growth was overwhelmingly driven by international demand. Overseas markets now account for more than half of all anime sales.

Overseas Revenue Powers Unprecedented Growth

International revenue soared to $14.25 billion. This is a 26 percent year-on-year increase. Domestic sales in Japan saw a more modest 2.8 percent rise.

The overseas market now makes up 56 percent of total revenue. This gap is expected to widen further. According to the AJA report, growth is fueled by comprehensive international licensing deals. These bundles include streaming rights, merchandise, and theatrical distribution.

Sony’s Blockbuster Films Signal Continued Momentum

The reported figures do not even include recent box office phenomena. Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle earned a staggering $670 million globally. It is now the highest-grossing Japanese film of all time.

Another Sony release, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, has also been a major success. It has generated $139 million since its October debut. These blockbusters, distributed by Sony’s Crunchyroll, highlight the sector’s powerful momentum heading into 2025.

The anime industry’s record-breaking performance solidifies its status as a global entertainment powerhouse. This sustained growth demonstrates the art form’s immense international appeal. The anime business shows no signs of slowing down.
