Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) called Charlie Kirk “ignorant” during a heated debate in Washington. The remark came as the House of Representatives voted to honor the slain conservative activist. The resolution passed on Friday with 310 votes in favor and 58 against.

The measure recognized Kirk’s life and condemned his murder at Utah Valley University last week. Ninety-five Democrats joined Republicans in supporting the resolution. Still, Ocasio-Cortez and several other Democrats raised concerns about honoring him.

Who Said Charlie Kirk Was Ignorant

Ocasio-Cortez made the comment while criticizing Kirk’s past remarks on race, civil rights, and Jewish communities. She pointed out that Kirk once called the Civil Rights Act of 1964 a mistake. She also noted his claim that Jewish people controlled colleges and Hollywood.

“These words matter,” she said, while explaining her “no” vote. She added that honoring Kirk without addressing his record would “normalize dangerous views.”

The resolution, however, passed with overwhelming bipartisan support. According to Reuters, Democratic leaders, including Hakeem Jeffries, Katherine Clark, and Pete Aguilar, voted in favor. The text condemned the shooting, praised law enforcement, and called on Americans to uphold free speech and civil debate.

Democratic Divide Over the Kirk Resolution

The vote revealed a split among Democrats. While leadership supported the measure, 58 Democrats opposed it. Thirty-eight voted “present,” and 22 did not vote.

Supporters argued that honoring Kirk was about condemning political violence. They said the resolution was not an endorsement of his past rhetoric. Opponents, however, insisted that it sent the wrong signal, especially to minority communities.

Ocasio-Cortez accused conservatives and media outlets of “weaponizing” Kirk’s death to attack free speech rights. She also criticized ABC’s decision to pull Jimmy Kimmel Live from the air. “This is a disgusting attack on the American people and the very First Amendment rights that define us as a country,” she said.

Impact on Political Debate

The episode highlights the deep partisan divisions over culture, speech, and political violence. Republicans framed the resolution as a unifying stand against extremism. Many Democrats saw it as a moment of tension between condemning violence and avoiding legitimizing divisive rhetoric.

The debate has also fueled wider discussions about media freedom. Ocasio-Cortez tied her remarks to concerns about censorship and the silencing of critical voices. The clash shows how Charlie Kirk’s legacy continues to stir sharp reactions, even after his death.

Ocasio-Cortez’s use of the word “ignorant” has now become a focal point in the broader fight over speech, politics, and memory in Congress.
