Apple Delays iPhone Air Launch in China Over eSIM Regulatory Hurdles

Apple has postponed the iPhone Air launch in China. The delay stems from unresolved regulatory issues concerning the device’s eSIM-only design. The news was first reported by the South China Morning Post.

This move impacts one of Apple’s most critical markets. The company is now working with local authorities and carriers to gain approval.

iPhone Air China eSIM delay

China’s Unique eSIM Landscape Causes Setback

Apple updated its Chinese website on Friday. It replaced the original September launch dates with a notice. The notice states “release information to be updated later.”

Pre-orders for other new models, the iPhone 17 series, will proceed as planned. This indicates the issue is specific to the iPhone Air’s design. The ultra-thin device lacks a physical SIM card tray entirely.

According to Reuters, eSIM adoption for smartphones in China has been limited. The nation’s major carriers have historically not supported the technology for iPhones. This creates a significant barrier for a device requiring it.

Apple Expands Carrier Partnerships for Resolution

Apple’s initial plan involved an exclusive partnership with China Unicom. The new strategy aims for broader support. The company now says all three state-owned carriers will provide eSIM support.

This support is pending regulatory approval. China Mobile recently posted on Weibo about enabling eSIM services. It did not provide a specific launch date for the functionality.

The expanded talks suggest Apple is confident a resolution is possible. A timely approval is crucial for Apple’s fourth-quarter sales in the region.

The iPhone Air delay highlights the challenges global tech firms face in China. Navigating local regulations remains a complex task. Apple’s success depends on resolving these eSIM issues quickly.
