FEATURE DESK: In a moment of great pride, a theatre at the University of New South Wales in Australia was renamed after Annada Gohain, an Assamese born who was the first woman to graduate from UNSW’s School of Chemical Engineering.
The Annada Gohain Theatre will replace Lecture Theatre G06 at the university’s CLB and will be on the tour of the Kensington campus.
Annada completed her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry Honours in 1948 from Cotton College, Guwahati after which she travelled to Australia in 1955 to participate in a special two-year Food Technology programme offered by the University of New South Wales as part of the Colombo Plan. She got her Master’s degree in Science on July 13, 1959, & her thesis was titled “Production of High-Quality Orange Juice Concentrate”.
Annada Gohain was also associated with the movement of Food preservation through the community canning centre and eventually in 1987, she retired from the Assam Government as Additional Director (Agriculture).
Annada Gohain was the daughter of renowned educator Mahendra Nath Gohain and the elder sister of critic and scholar Dr Hiren Gohain.
It is to be noted that the University of New South Wales (USNW) will be visiting Guwahati on April 28 and on April 29 in Shillong at the Global Reach Exhibition. Furthermore, the Global Reach Guwahati Branch has been helping students of northeast India to go study at UNSW for the last 18 years.
