Baltimore County has officially canceled plans for a new public library branch in Middle River. County Executive Kathy Klausmeier announced the decision on Friday, ending negotiations for the proposed Greenleigh area location. The move aims to prevent future tax hikes.

    Baltimore County library project

Klausmeier cited long-term financial risks as the primary reason. She stated the project would have committed the county to tens of millions in unanticipated costs for decades.

    Fiscal Responsibility Drives Library Decision

The county executive emphasized her commitment to budget stability. A new library lease would have added massive, multi-decade financial obligations. These costs included lease payments, equipment, and ongoing maintenance.

According to Klausmeier, this risk is heightened by recent state revenue news. Lower-than-expected state revenues for the coming fiscal year create uncertainty. She wants to avoid contracts that could force future leaders to raise taxes.

Focus Shifts to Existing Library Projects

This decision allows the county to prioritize other long-awaited library projects. The much-needed replacements for the Essex and Lansdowne branches can now move forward. The combined Randallstown library and recreation center is also a key priority.

Klausmeier reaffirmed her administration’s support for libraries when fiscally sound. She recently kicked off a $22 million renovation at the Woodlawn Library Branch. Previous investments have also modernized the Catonsville and White Marsh locations.

The cancellation of the Middle River library underscores a shift toward fiscal caution in Baltimore County. This decision prioritizes financial stability over new amenities, ensuring the county’s library system evolves without burdening taxpayers.
