The Bangladesh government began a strict security clampdown on Saturday after the shooting of Sharif Osmann Hadi in Dhaka. Hadi is a youth leader and an election candidate. Officials said the move was needed to stop more unrest. The attack took place on Friday during his campaign in the Bijoynagar area.

The government said the new action is part of a wider effort to control street violence. According to PTI, Hadi was shot by three attackers. Doctors said his condition remains critical. The event triggered concern across the capital.

Bangladesh Security Clampdown Expands Under Operation Devil Hunt

Home Affairs adviser Lt Gen (rtd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said the government will start the second phase of Operation Devil Hunt. He said the aim is to protect the public and stop the spread of illegal arms. The announcement was made at a press briefing in Dhaka.

According to Reuters, the authorities have also released a photo of one suspect. He is identified as Faisal Karim Masud. A reward of Taka 50 lakh has been offered for information leading to his arrest.

Operation Devil Hunt first began earlier this year. It followed protests after an attack on a former minister’s home. The operation focused on groups linked to the now-disbanded Awami League. The new phase is expected to be larger and more intense.

Hadi is the chief of Inquilab Mancha. The group has pushed for the dissolution of the Awami League. Police said the motive behind the attack is still under investigation. The security forces have increased patrols in crowded areas and key entry points around Dhaka.

Impact of the Crackdown on Politics and Public Safety

The new security measures come as the country moves toward the February 12 general elections. Analysts say the clampdown may affect campaign movements in the coming days. Many independent candidates have already asked for more police protection.

The shooting raised fear among voters. People in central Dhaka said they want calm before voting day. The government said the crackdown will stay in place until the situation stabilizes.

The move may also influence political groups that once operated under the Awami League. Experts told AP News that such actions can reshape the campaign climate. Some groups may slow down public events to avoid clashes or arrests.
