BMW has issued an urgent safety recall for nearly 200,000 vehicles in the United States. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) warns owners to park these cars outside immediately. The recall addresses a serious defect that can cause a vehicle fire even when the engine is turned off.

The problem involves a specific electrical component that can overheat. This overheating poses a fire hazard whether the car is parked or being driven. Owners are being notified by mail starting in mid-November.

Faulty Starter Relay Identified as Fire Hazard

The recall targets a faulty engine starter relay. According to NHTSA documentation, this relay is located in the engine compartment. It can corrode over time, leading to a short circuit.

This short circuit generates excessive heat. The heat can then ignite surrounding materials, starting a fire. The risk exists regardless of whether the vehicle is in use.

The recall affects a wide range of BMW models from 2019 to 2022. It also includes certain Toyota Supra models, which share components with BMW. In total, nearly 200,000 vehicles are included in this safety action.

Phased Repair Plan and Owner Instructions

BMW is implementing a phased repair plan due to parts availability. Owners will receive an initial notification letter around November 14. This letter will instruct them on immediate safety steps.

A second notice will be sent later when repair parts are ready. The fix involves replacing the defective starter relay with an updated part. This service will be performed at no cost to the vehicle owner.

Owners can check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the NHTSA website. This will confirm if their specific car is part of the recall. BMW customer service is also available to answer questions.

This BMW park outside recall highlights a significant safety issue. Owners of affected models must take the warning seriously. Parking outdoors away from structures is critical until the repair is complete.
