Special Correspondent : A routine evening on the busy streets of Nikunja-2 turned into a scene of terror when businessman Ziaul Mahmud was abducted in front of Spicy Hotel on Monday. According to police, a group of criminals swiftly forced him into a black Hiace microbus in a “cold, calculated and well-planned operation.”

Locals allege that the abduction ring was led by the area’s notorious figure ‘Gunda Jasim’, long known for his dominance in the Jamtola–Tanpara–Nikunja belt. Residents claim Jasim operated under the political shelter of a local BNP joint convener, whose backing allegedly enabled the gang to run a reign of fear involving extortion, land grabbing and intimidation.
According to residents, Jasim was used as a “muscleman” by the political figure, and was frequently deployed to “pick up or threaten anyone” at will.
The Monday night abduction, carried out within seconds, left locals shaken. “Using the cover of night, Jasim regularly carried out extortion and terror activities in the area,” a resident said, requesting anonymity for security reasons.
SI Md. Fazle Rabbi, the investigation officer, told this correspondent:
“This was a highly organised and pre-planned operation. The abductors intended to abduct and intimidate the businessman to send a message of dominance. This is far from a routine crime.”
Using technological tracking, Khilkhet Police traced the microbus to Sreepur area of Ashulia, where officers conducted a rapid operation and rescued the businessman unharmed.
Police arrested seven individuals during the raid:
Jasim (widely known as ‘Gunda Jasim’)
Md. Faruk Hossain, Mahbub Munshi, Onik, Md. Alamgir Hossain, Mahadi Sarkar Rakib, Shilpi Akhter alias Rani
Authorities confirmed that Raja Mia and Tarek Aziz, believed to be associates of the gang, remain on the run. Police operations to detain the remaining suspects are ongoing.
A case has been filed at Khilkhet Police Station, Case No. 09, dated 09/12/2025, under Sections 365/34 of the Penal Code.
Local residents expressed relief following the arrests.
“For years, a man who ruled the area with fear—day and night—has finally been unmasked,” said one resident. “The police action proved that no matter how powerful a criminal thinks he is, the law is stronger.”
