ZAKIR HOSSAIN, RANGPUR : The 66th Infantry Division of Bangladesh Army on Wednesday successfully conducted `cataract surgery’ of four vulnerable patients at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) Rangpur as part of its free eye care service.
General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 66th Infantry Division and Rangpur Area Commander Major General Mohammad Kamrul Hasan visited the patients at the hospital. Senior officials of Rangpur Cantonment also accompanied him.
Colonel Dr. AKM Johirul Hossain Khan, Commandant of Rangpur CMH, said, the cataract surgery is usually very expensive in the private hospitals and clinics that the vulnerable patients can’t afford easily.
`We have selected 17 cataract vulnerable patients for the surgery from a free eye care service camp. which will be done phase by phase. Cataract surgery of rest of the patients will be done phase by phase,’ he added.
Meherun Nahar, a 60-year-old vulnerable patient who underwent cataract surgery at CMH and a resident of Jaigirhat village in Mithapukur upazila of the district, expressed her happiness saying she could see everything clear now after the surgery.
She had been suffering from visual complications for many years, but she could not manage the expensive treatment cost in the private hospitals.
‘I feel very happy as the army offers me the best treatment for visual problems at CMH at free of cost,’ Meherun Nahar added.
Earlier the 66th Infantry Division organized a day-long free eye care service at Sheetal Diagnostic Center of the city on February 20.
Three ophthalmologists of Rangpur Combined Military Hospital (CMH) and two ophthalmologists of Rangpur Medical College Hospital provided the healthcare service to some 336 patients. Of them 17 were referred for cataract surgery.
