Coaches in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools planned a work stoppage. They are protesting pay that has not increased since 2018. The potential boycott involved sitting out practices or even games.

According to the Charlotte Observer, a coalition of coaches organized the action. They argue their compensation does not reflect their extensive duties and time commitment. This dispute highlights a growing tension within the district’s athletic programs.

Pay Stagnation and Heavy Tax Burden Frustrate Coaches

The last pay raise occurred seven years ago. The stipend increased from $4,172 to $5,006. This amount is paid as a bonus and is taxed at nearly 50 percent.

Coaches also face additional, unpaid responsibilities. They are often required to drive teams to games using school buses. This task demands a special license but comes with no reimbursement for the time or cost of obtaining it.

NFL Veteran Coach Calls Compensation “Ridiculous”

Former Carolina Panthers player Captain Munnerlyn voiced strong criticism. He is now a first-year head coach at Chambers High School. Munnerlyn detailed the immense workload for meager pay.

“You look at other states, like South Carolina, and the pay is different,” Munnerlyn told the Charlotte Observer. He noted the pay is far better in Georgia and his home state of Alabama. The longtime NFL veteran called the situation for veteran coaches in the district “ridiculous.”
