Scientists have said that the behavior and habitat of crocodiles have changed significantly. Crocodiles are basically ectothermic or cold-blooded animals. And therefore, crocodiles depend on the external environment to regulate their body temperature. But due to climate change, pressure is being put on the crocodile’s body.
According to scientists, the temperature of river water is increasing due to global warming. As a result, crocodiles living in various estuaries of Australia are diving less. Not only that, crocodiles also do not have to work hard to warm their body blood.
A study published in the journal Current Biology says that since 2008, crocodiles’ body temperatures have increased by -55 degrees Celsius. In addition, due to the increase in ambient temperatures, crocodiles are experiencing temperatures close to critical thermal limits. These crocodiles usually thrive in warm climates by basking in the sun or in water. But their body balance is being disrupted due to rising global temperatures.
Scientist Caitlin Barham said, crocodiles are in trouble due to the heat. The increase in temperature has increased the speed of crocodile metabolism. This means that crocodiles are using more oxygen. Research has shown that crocodiles currently cannot hold their breath for long.
This may affect crocodile reproduction in the future. Prolonged heat prevents crocodiles from physically exerting themselves and conserving energy. If this trend of climate change continues, crocodiles will be forced to find new habitats to cool their bodies.
