Los Angeles police say singer D4vd has not been named a suspect in the death of 15 year old Celeste Rivas Hernandez, whose body was found in the front trunk of a Tesla registered in his name. The case remains an open death investigation with no arrests and no criminal charges filed.
Celeste’s decomposed body was discovered on September 8 at a Hollywood tow yard, after workers reported a foul odor coming from an impounded Tesla. The car had been towed days earlier after it was found abandoned on a street in the Hollywood Hills.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner later identified the remains as those of Celeste, a teen from Lake Elsinore who had been reported missing in 2024. Her death certificate lists the cause of death as “deferred” and the manner of death as “pending investigation,” meaning the official autopsy ruling is still not complete.
In a recent update, LAPD’s Robbery Homicide Division said the medical examiner has not yet determined how Celeste died. As a result, detectives say it remains unclear whether any crime occurred beyond the concealment of her body, and that there are currently no suspects in the case.
Investigators believe Celeste may have been dead for several weeks before her body was found, based on how long the vehicle appears to have sat abandoned and the condition of the remains. Detectives are relying on lab tests and toxicology to understand what happened and to decide whether the case will ever be treated as a homicide.
Police executed a search warrant at a Hollywood Hills home where D4vd had been staying while on tour. Electronics and other items were seized, and investigators say they are following multiple leads tied to the property and the car’s movements before it was towed.
Los Angeles police and legal analysts say the only clearly defined potential offense at this stage is the concealment of a body, a misdemeanor under California law if it involves hiding an accidental death. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has confirmed it has not yet received a case from LAPD for charging review.
Amid growing public scrutiny, D4vd has hired high profile criminal defense attorney Blair Berk. His remaining U.S. tour dates and a planned deluxe release of his album were canceled after Celeste was identified, and several brand partnerships have been suspended. His representatives have previously said he is cooperating with the investigation.
For now, authorities say the focus remains on finishing the autopsy work and reconstructing the timeline of Celeste’s final weeks. Until cause and manner of death are established, police stress that no one, including D4vd, has been named a suspect.
