Authorities in Delhi have ordered a shift to hybrid classes for most school students. The directive was issued on Saturday by the Delhi Directorate of Education. It applies to all government and private schools in the capital.

Delhi air pollution

This drastic step responds to a severe spike in air pollution. The city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) entered the ‘severe’ category, reaching 497 in some areas. The Commission for Air Quality Management has activated its highest-level emergency measures.

Emergency GRAP Stage-IV Measures Enacted Across Capital

The severe pollution triggered Stage-IV of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). According to the Central Pollution Control Board, the AQI at Bawana was 497 early Sunday. Other areas like Narela and Okhla also recorded levels above 470.

The government order mandates work-from-home for 50% of its staff. Private offices must also operate at half capacity. Only essential services are exempt from these strict new rules.

Public Health and Daily Life Gripped by Toxic Smog

The immediate impact on daily life is significant. The hybrid schooling arrangement affects students up to Class IX and Class XI. This aims to reduce children’s exposure to the hazardous outdoor air.

For the public, the dense smog poses serious health risks. Authorities urge minimizing outdoor activity. The long-term success depends on weather changes and sustained enforcement of pollution controls.

The ongoing air quality crisis has fundamentally disrupted normal life in Delhi. The shift to hybrid schooling highlights the severe impact of Delhi air pollution on the city’s most vulnerable residents. Officials warn restrictions will remain until AQI levels show sustained improvement.

A quick knowledge drop for you

Which school classes are affected by the hybrid order?

The order applies to students up to Class IX and Class XI. Classes X and XII are reportedly continuing in-person for board exam preparation.

What is the current AQI level in Delhi?

On Sunday, AQI levels were in the ‘severe’ category, reaching as high as 497 in Bawana. Multiple monitoring stations reported levels well above 400.

What are Stage-IV GRAP measures?

Stage-IV is the highest emergency level under the Graded Response Action Plan. It includes bans on certain vehicles, work-from-home orders, and possible school closures.

Are private offices closed in Delhi?

Private offices are not closed but must operate with only 50% staff physically present. The remaining 50% are mandated to work from home.

Why is the pollution so bad right now?

Pollution levels have surged due to a combination of adverse weather conditions, including low wind speed and temperature, which trap pollutants close to the ground.
