Former NFL running back Doug Martin has died at age 36. His family confirmed his death in a brief statement. They said the cause of death is currently unconfirmed.
Separately, Oakland police reported an in-custody death early Saturday in East Oakland. The person has not been publicly identified by authorities.
Police say officers responded just after 4:15 a.m. to a reported home break-in on the 11000 block of Ettrick Street. They were also told the person at the scene was experiencing a medical emergency.
A brief struggle occurred while officers attempted to detain the individual. The person became unresponsive, received medical aid, and was transported to a hospital, where they died.
The Oakland Police Department says the case is under active investigation. The homicide unit and internal affairs are involved, with oversight from the Oakland Police Commission, the Community Police Review Agency, and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.
The officers involved are on paid administrative leave. Police say this is standard procedure in such cases.
Authorities have not released a cause of death. The Alameda County Coroner’s Office has not issued public findings.
Martin, an Oakland native, starred at Boise State before becoming a 2012 first-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He earned two Pro Bowl selections and a 2015 All-Pro nod.
He later played for the Oakland Raiders in 2018. Fans and former teammates have shared tributes and condolences.
Because officials have not publicly confirmed the identity in the in-custody case, this report treats Martin’s confirmed death and the Oakland in-custody death as separate developments pending official identification. We will update if authorities release new information.
