Usiripalli is a 28-year-old Indian national studying at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. According to the US Attorney’s office in Massachusetts, his student visa had expired, making his presence in the country illegal.

Details of the Mid-Air Assault Emerge

The incident occurred on October 25. Officials state that the attack began shortly after the meal service. Usiripalli allegedly approached a seat where a 17-year-old was sleeping.

He lunged forward and stabbed the teenager in the collarbone as he woke up. He then turned and struck another 17-year-old passenger in the back of the head. The attack caused serious injuries to both victims.

When other passengers and a crew member tried to intervene, the situation escalated. The suspect reportedly slapped a female passenger and attempted to slap a flight crew member. He also made a disturbing gesture, pretending to shoot himself in the head with his hand.

Legal Consequences and Immigration Status

Praneeth Kumar Usiripalli now faces serious federal charges. He has been charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to do bodily harm. Each charge carries a potential penalty of up to 10 years in prison.

He could also face a fine of up to $250,000 if convicted. His expired visa status adds a significant immigration complication to his legal troubles. The case highlights the severe repercussions of mid-air violence.
