A man was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Franklin Park, Illinois, on Friday morning.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) named him as Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez.
Officials said he tried to drive into federal agents during a vehicle stop near O’Hare International Airport.

The incident unfolded when ICE officers attempted to arrest Gonzalez.
According to DHS, he refused orders and accelerated toward agents, striking one officer with his car.
That officer was dragged a significant distance before firing his weapon, hitting the suspect.

    What Happened in Franklin Park

The DHS stated that officers conducted a vehicle stop in Franklin Park.
Gonzalez resisted and used his vehicle as a weapon.
One officer was injured after being hit and dragged.

The officer then discharged his firearm, which struck Gonzalez.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene.
Gonzalez was pronounced dead shortly after.

DHS said Gonzalez was an “illegal criminal alien” with a history of reckless driving.
He entered the United States at an unknown date and time.
According to Reuters, the FBI confirmed it is aware of the shooting and is assisting local authorities.

    Reactions From Officials

Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin defended the actions of the ICE agent.
She said the officer followed his training and acted to protect public safety.
She also criticized online campaigns that encourage people to resist law enforcement.

“We are praying for the speedy recovery of our law enforcement officer,” McLaughlin said in a statement.
The officer’s condition has not been disclosed, but officials noted he is receiving treatment.

The FBI’s Chicago field office said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Police presence in Franklin Park remained heavy for several hours after the incident.
The village is located about 15 miles northwest of Chicago.

    Why This Case Matters

The shooting raises questions about immigration enforcement and public safety.
Gonzalez’s death will likely fuel debate on ICE operations in local communities.
Supporters of the agency argue that officers face dangerous threats daily.

Critics may call for greater oversight of use-of-force incidents.
The FBI’s involvement signals the seriousness of the case.
Authorities stressed that more details will be released after a full review.

The Franklin Park shooting highlights the risks federal officers face during arrests.
It also adds to the ongoing national debate over immigration enforcement and community safety.
