G20 seminar on ways to achieve sustainable future held at Gauhati University

INTERNATIONAL DESK: A G20 Seminar on ‘Financing for SDGs: Blueprint to achieve a Sustainable Future’ was organised at Gauhati University on Tuesday prior to the first G20 Sustainable Finance and Working Group (SFWG) Meeting, stated a press release. The G20 Seminar was inaugurated by Prof Pratap Jyoti Handique, Vice Chancellor, Gauhati University.

Geetu Joshi, Advisor, Ministry of Finance who presided at the seminar said that the seminar intends to spread awareness about the importance of G20 and to take G20 to the people of Assam.

DP Goyal, Director, IIM, Shillong delivered the keynote address at the seminar. In his address, Dr Goyal said that IIM, Shillong and Sustainability are closely interlinked and shared his perspective on the topic. Sunil Nair, CGM, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) delivered a special address on the ‘Role of Banks in Financing of SDGs’, in which he spoke on the role of banks and the steps that should be undertaken in this regard.

The Seminar also comprised two Panel Discussions. The first Panel Discussion was themed on ‘Sustainable Financing: Way Ahead to achieve Agenda 2030’ which was chaired by Geetu Joshi.

As per the press release, the Panelists comprised industry experts like Neha Kumar from Climate Bonds Initiative, followed by Prarthana Borah from CDP India, Rouhin Deb, Chief Economist, Government of Assam, Roopa Satish from IndusInd Bank and Soumen Bagchi from UNICEF. While, the second Panel Discussion was themed on the ‘Role of Financial Sector Regulators in Financing the SDGs’ which was chaired by Brij Raj, GM, RBI. The Panelists also comprised senior officers from financial sector regulators, like Amit Sinha from RBI, Surabhi Gupta from SEBI, Ammu Venkata Ramana from IRDAI and Abhilash Mulakala from IFSCA.

The Panelists in both Sessions of the interactive seminar offered insights from their experience on the topic and gave suggestions on ‘Financing the SDGs’. Hemanta Kumar Nath, Registrar, Gauhati University gave the Vote of Thanks at the seminar. (guwahatiplus.com)
