Animal Collective member Brian Weitz has announced his first solo studio album. The record is titled Can I Get a Pack of Camel Lights?. It is scheduled for release on January 30 through Drag City.

The musician, known professionally as Geologist, also shared the lead single. The track is called “Tonic” and arrives with a new music video. This marks a significant step for the longtime collaborative artist.
Inspiration and Collaboration Define New Project
Geologist named the single after the now-closed New York venue Tonic. He was inspired by a 1998 Keiji Haino performance he witnessed there. The track features contributions from drummer Alianna Kalaba and his Animal Collective bandmate Avey Tare.
In a statement, Geologist reflected on his musical journey. He admitted he was never very good at guitar. He found a new creative path using a hurdy-gurdy, which brought him closer to the sound he admired.
A Collective Effort for a Solo Record
The album features a wide array of collaborators. The list includes recording engineer Adam McDaniel and drummers Emma Garau and Ryan Oslance. Clarinetist Shane McCord, cellist Mikey Powers, and vibraphonist Adam Lion also contributed.
Geologist’s son, Merrick Weitz, plays guitar on the track “Government Job.” This personal touch adds a unique layer to the debut. The album follows a collaborative release with Doug Shaw earlier this year. Animal Collective’s last album, Isn’t It Now?, was released in 2023.
The debut solo album from Animal Collective’s Geologist arrives January 30. “Tonic” offers the first listen into this highly personal new project from the acclaimed musician.
