Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has urged officials to give the producers of Bigg Boss Kannada a chance to fix environmental violations after the Jollywood Studio, where the show is being filmed, was sealed by authorities. The studio, located in Bengaluru’s Bidadi Industrial Area, was shut down on Tuesday night following alleged non-compliance with pollution control laws.
Shivakumar took to social media on Wednesday to say he had instructed officials to allow the show’s team to correct their mistakes. His intervention comes amid concerns that the closure could disrupt ongoing filming of the reality series, which is one of Karnataka’s most-watched television programs.
Bigg Boss Kannada Studio Sealed Over Environmental Violations
According to the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), Vels Studio and Entertainment Limited—the facility hosting Bigg Boss Kannada—was operating without the required environmental clearances under the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act and the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act. Officials said the studio had also failed to comply with several environmental safeguards.
“The board doesn’t know about any Bigg Boss or anything—maybe they are inside the premises of this Vels Studio. Vels Studio is the actual occupier of that land, and they don’t have the required consent for operation as per the Air Act and Water Act. For this reason, and due to some non-compliances, a closure order was issued yesterday,” said SS Lingaraju, Member Secretary of the KSPCB, while confirming the action.
The Bengaluru South district administration executed the closure order and sealed the premises late Tuesday, acting on the board’s directive. Reports indicate that officials from both the district administration and the KSPCB were involved in the operation, which temporarily halted production activities at the studio.
Shivakumar Seeks a Second Chance for Producers
Speaking to reporters, Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar emphasized the importance of supporting private investments while maintaining regulatory standards. “We have to look at the larger picture. If there is a mistake on the makers’ side, they have to rectify it. I’ve asked them to give the show an opportunity. Bigg Boss or any entertainment shows are necessary. Private businesses should come and invest, and if mistakes happen, they have to be set right,” he said, as quoted by India Today.
In his statement on X (formerly Twitter), Shivakumar added, “The Jollywood Studio, where Bigg Boss is being held, has been sealed for not complying with the Pollution Control Board rules. However, private individuals have invested here, and employment is taking place, which is important. Therefore, I have instructed the officials to give it a chance to rectify the mistakes and proceed.”
His remarks have sparked discussion about the balance between environmental compliance and the economic role of entertainment projects in the state. The studio reportedly employs dozens of workers and supports numerous associated small businesses in the area.
Industry and Public Reaction
The shutdown of the Bigg Boss Kannada set has led to uncertainty among fans and production staff. The show, hosted by actor Kiccha Sudeep, is a major television attraction in Karnataka and generates significant revenue for the entertainment sector.
Environmental activists, however, have defended the KSPCB’s move, stating that the rules must apply uniformly. “No one should be exempt from environmental norms, whether it’s a small business or a major TV production,” said one Bengaluru-based environmentalist.
Meanwhile, discussions between the producers and officials are ongoing. Sources suggest that if Vels Studio provides the necessary clearances and commits to compliance, filming could resume soon.
The fate of the Bigg Boss Kannada shoot now rests on whether the producers meet KSPCB’s conditions and secure permission to restart operations. For now, the show remains on hold pending further review.
