Google Q2 2026 Earnings Test AI Infrastructure $190 Billion Bet

By Tarek HasanJuly 23, 20262 Mins Read

Alphabet reported Q2 2026 earnings on July 22, with Wall Street watching closely to see how the company’s massive artificial intelligence spending is translating into returns. Expected revenue sits at $116.9 billion, with analysts projecting $2.89 earnings per share. The biggest wildcard is Google Cloud, which hit $20 billion in Q1 revenue up 63% year over year.

Google’s cloud business has become the market darling because enterprise AI demand is accelerating. The segment reported $462 billion in contracted backlog heading into the quarter, nearly double the prior period. That’s where investors see real growth.

The AI Capital Expenditure Question

Investors have been anxious about how far Alphabet will push capex spending to build data centers for AI training. The street consensus suggests management will provide guidance on the company’s infrastructure roadmap. Google has been pouring billions into chips, cooling systems, and electricity agreements to stay competitive with OpenAI, Microsoft, and others racing to train massive frontier models.

An estimated $80 billion boost to Q2 operating income comes from how Alphabet accounts for its stake in Anthropic, not from core business growth. That creates noise in the numbers.

YouTube Holding Steady

YouTube advertising revenue is expected to reach $10.8 billion for the quarter, continuing to deliver steady returns even as search advertising faces macro headwinds. The video business remains one of Alphabet’s most reliable cash engines.

What Comes Next

The real question for investors isn’t what happened in Q2, it’s what the company plans to spend in the coming quarters. Alphabet said it would approach capex carefully, but the AI arms race doesn’t slow for caution.

Google Cloud’s 63% year-over-year growth in Q1 and $462 billion contracted backlog suggest the company is winning enterprise customers at scale, though the path to sustained profitability remains uncertain.
