The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert. It forecasts moderate to heavy snowfall in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir. This major wet spell follows a prolonged dry period in the region.

The yellow alert covers both the Kashmir and Jammu divisions. Specific districts like Kupwara, Bandipora, and Ganderbal are expected to see significant snowfall on December 21. Authorities are on high alert due to the forecast.

Temperatures have been fluctuating ahead of this weather event. According to IMD data from Saturday, Pulwama was the coldest place in the region at minus 3.2 degrees Celsius. Srinagar recorded a low of minus 0.4 degrees Celsius.

Government Reviews Winter Preparedness Measures

Ahead of the expected snowfall, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah chaired a review meeting. He assessed winter preparedness for both the Jammu region and the Kashmir Valley on Saturday. The focus was on areas anticipating heavy snow.

Officials finalized various arrangements. These include de-watering plans, power supply provisions, and 4×4 ambulances. Helicopter services for remote areas and 24×7 control rooms were also organized.

Chief Minister Abdullah expressed optimism despite potential hardships. He stated the snowfall would clear the air and reduce pollution. He also noted it would kickstart the crucial winter tourism season.
