The International Cinematographers Guild is closing its iconic publication, ICG Magazine. This decision ends a 94-year legacy of film industry journalism. The final print issue will be published in December.

ICG Magazine shutdown

The union’s leadership confirmed the move to members last week. They cited a strategic shift toward new communication methods. This transition marks a significant change for its 10,000 members.

Union Shifts Focus to Digital Member Outreach

National President John Lindley announced the decision. He said the National Executive Board made the choice after thoughtful discussion. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the magazine’s roots date back to 1929.

The publication was originally named The International Photographer. It has served cinematographers and publicists for nearly a century. The union has not confirmed if the closure resulted in staff layoffs.

ICG Magazine was known for its monthly deep-dives. It featured member profiles and technical analyses of new film and television projects. Its focus was always on camera work and publicity.

Printed Newsletter to Replace Legacy Publication

The guild plans to launch a new bi-monthly printed newsletter. This new communication is scheduled for an early 2026 debut. It will also be available in a digital format online.

This move reflects a broader industry trend. Many organizations are moving from traditional print to more frequent digital updates. The union’s recently launched podcast may continue, but its future is unclear.

Other Hollywood guilds continue their print publications. SAG-AFTRA Magazine, DGA Monthly, and Written By are still operating. The Motion Picture Editors Guild also continues its Cinemontage magazine.

The sunsetting of ICG Magazine concludes a historic chapter for Hollywood’s behind-the-scenes storytellers. This strategic shift underscores the ongoing digital transformation across the media industry. The union’s legacy of connecting members now enters a new, uncharted phase.
