How eSIM Scams Drain Bank Accounts and How to Stop Them

A new eSIM scam is targeting mobile users across India. Fraudsters are hijacking phone numbers to steal money and personal data. This sophisticated scheme exploits the digital SIM activation process.

Authorities have issued urgent warnings to the public. The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) confirmed the threat. They report a sharp rise in these incidents recently.

How The eSIM Scam Operation Works

Criminals first collect personal data through phishing calls. They pretend to be officials from telecom companies or banks. Victims are tricked into sharing their personal information.

This data often includes your Aadhaar number. Fraudsters use it to initiate an eSIM swap request. They then contact your telecom provider pretending to be you.

According to Reuters, this method bypasses many security checks. The scammer receives a one-time password (OTP) on your number. They use that OTP to activate a new eSIM on their device.

Your original SIM becomes deactivated immediately. You lose all network connectivity. The fraudster now controls your mobile number.

Protecting Yourself From eSIM Fraud

Never share personal details with unknown callers. Legitimate companies will not ask for sensitive information over the phone. Be extremely cautious with any unexpected requests for data.

Enable additional security features with your telecom provider. Many offer PIN or password protection for SIM swaps. This adds an extra layer of security to your account.

Monitor your network connectivity regularly. If your phone suddenly loses service, contact your provider immediately. This could be the first sign of a SIM swap attack.

Report any suspected fraud to the cyber crime helpline. The number is 1930. Quick action can help prevent financial loss.

This new eSIM scam represents a significant threat to digital security. Understanding how it works is your first defense. Always verify requests for personal information directly with official sources through their verified contact channels.

Info at your fingertips

How do I know if I’m a victim of eSIM fraud?

Your mobile network will suddenly stop working. You may also receive notifications about a SIM change you didn’t request. Contact your telecom provider immediately if this happens.

What should I do if my SIM is swapped illegally?

Contact your telecom provider’s customer care without delay. Also file a report with the cyber crime cell at 1930. Immediately inform your bank to freeze transactions.

Can I disable eSIM activation on my number?

Many telecom providers allow you to disable eSIM functionality. Contact customer service to inquire about this option. Some may offer additional security locks for SIM swaps.

Which telecom providers are affected by this scam?

All major providers in India have reported cases. The scam targets users across Jio, Airtel, and Vi networks. No provider is completely immune to this type of fraud.

What information do scammers need to execute this fraud?

They typically need your phone number and personal details. This often includes your Aadhaar number or other identification. They may also need answers to security questions.
