INTERNATIONAL DESK: A Huawei Technologies unit is shipping new Chinese-made chips for surveillance cameras, a fresh sign that the Chinese tech giant has found ways around four years of US export controls, says two sources who were briefed on the unit’s activities.
The shipments to surveillance camera manufacturers from the company’s HiSilicon chip design unit started this year with at least some of their customers being Chinese.
China accused the US of infiltrating Huawei servers starting in 2009, part of a broad-based effort to steal data that culminated in tens of thousands of cyberattacks against Chinese targets last year.
Meng Wanzhou, Huawei’s rotating chairwoman and chief financial officer, noted that the company will implement a comprehensive intelligent strategy to accelerate the intelligent transformation of the industry.
Meanwhile, Germany’s interior ministry is planning to force telecoms operators to slash the use of equipment from Huawei and ZTE in their 5G networks after a review highlighted an over-reliance on these Chinese suppliers, a government official said. (TS)
