A migrant vessel has sunk near the Malaysia-Thailand border. The incident leaves hundreds of people missing. Malaysian authorities are leading search and rescue efforts.

Malaysia migrant boat

The boat was carrying approximately 300 individuals. It departed from Buthidaung, Myanmar. Survivors were found off the coast of Langkawi, Malaysia.

Details of the Malaysia Migrant Boat Disaster

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency confirmed the sinking. First Admiral Romli Mustafa provided the details. He stated the boat went down several days ago.

Ten survivors have been rescued from the water. They were found in the waters near Langkawi island. One body was also recovered from the sea.

According to state media Bernama, the survivors include three Myanmar men. Two Rohingya men and one Bangladeshi man were also saved. The recovered body was that of a Rohingya woman.

Perilous Journey Ends in Tragedy

The passengers were fleeing Myanmar. The Rohingya minority in Myanmar faces severe persecution. They are denied citizenship and face systemic abuse.

Kedah police chief Adzli Abu Shah explained the journey. He said the migrants initially traveled on a large vessel. As they neared the border, they transferred to smaller boats.

They were instructed to board three smaller boats. This was an attempt to avoid detection by authorities. Each smaller boat carried about 100 people.

The status of the other two boats remains unknown. A massive search-and-rescue operation is now ongoing. Hopes are fading for finding more survivors alive.

This developing tragedy underscores the desperate and dangerous routes migrants are forced to take, with the final toll of the Malaysia migrant boat disaster still unknown.
