
INTERNATIONAL DESK: In the first official contact with the Taliban, Indian envoy to Qatar Deepak Mittal met Taliban leader Sher Mohammad Abbas Stankzai at the Indian Embassy in Doha on Tuesday.
A statement from the Ministry of External Affairs of India said, “Today Ambassador of India to Qatar Deepak Mittal met Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanakzai, Head of the Political Office of the Taliban in Doha.”
The meeting took place at the Indian Embassy, Doha at the request of the Taliban side.
It said the discussions focused on the safety, security and speedy return of Indian nationals stranded in Afghanistan. The visit of Afghan nationals, especially minorities who wish to travel to India, also came to the fore.
It said that Ambassador Mittal expressed India’s concern that the soil of Afghanistan should not be used in any way for anti-India activities and terrorism.
The Taliban representative assured the ambassador that these issues would be addressed positively.
It has come at a time when looking at it Emerging Situation in AfghanistanPrime Minister Narendra Modi had recently directed that a high-level group comprising External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, NSA Ajit Doval and senior officials Focus on India’s immediate priorities.
This group has been meeting regularly for the past few days. It has captured issues related to the safe return of stranded Indians, travel of Afghan nationals (especially minorities) to India, and ensuring that Afghanistan territory is not used for terrorism directed against India.
The group is also monitoring the situation on the ground in Afghanistan and international responses, including resolutions passed by the UN Security Council.
