The pair committed the crimes in a single day last April. They later claimed financial hardship in their home country was the motive. According to the Straits Times, both men received identical sentences for their actions.

Details of the Singapore Robberies

The two men, aged 23 and 27, arrived in Singapore as tourists. While exploring the Little India district, a stranger offered them contact details for sex workers. Daison then reportedly conceived the plan to rob the women.

Their first victim was lured to a hotel room in Jalan Besar. The duo immediately restrained her. They tied her hands and legs before assaulting her and stealing her possessions.

They took her jewellery, passport, and a significant amount of cash. Later that night, they met a second woman. They dragged her and robbed her of two mobile phones and more cash.

Legal Consequences and Mitigation Pleas

The crime was uncovered after the second victim reported it. She told a man what happened, who then alerted the police. The authorities quickly identified and arrested the two Indian nationals.

During court proceedings, both men pleaded for leniency. Daison cited his father’s recent death and family financial struggles. Mayilarasan claimed his wife and child were suffering financially back in India.

The judge sentenced each man to five years and one month in jail. They also received 12 strokes of the cane. This punishment is a standard judicial corporal penalty in Singapore for certain offenses.

The case highlights the severe legal consequences for violent crime in Singapore, even for foreign visitors. The sentences for the Indian tourists demonstrate the country’s strict enforcement of its laws.
