Apple’s new iPhone 17 lineup supports faster wireless charging. The standard iPhone 17, Pro, and Pro Max models now work with next-generation Qi2.2 chargers. This new standard delivers up to 25 watts of power.

This upgrade matches the charging speed of Apple’s own MagSafe 2 technology. It provides users with more flexible and powerful charging options. The change was confirmed alongside the new phone announcements.

New Charging Standard Offers MagSafe Speeds

The new Qi2.2 specification is a significant upgrade. It finally closes the gap between the Qi and MagSafe standards. This is a major development for the accessory market.

Manufacturers can now produce a single charger for both standards. Consumers benefit from faster, more universal options. This move promotes greater interoperability across devices.

iPhone Air Maintains 20W Charging Limit

Not all new models support the faster 25W speed. The newly announced iPhone Air is limited to 20W wireless charging. This applies to both MagSafe and the new Qi2.2 standard.

The limitation is likely due to the iPhone Air’s ultra-thin design. Its compact form factor may not support the thermal requirements for faster charging. This creates a clear performance tier within the new lineup.

The latest iPhones offer more ways to get a quick power boost, making the new 25W Qi2.2 wireless charging a standout feature for everyday convenience.

Info at your fingertips

What is Qi2.2 wireless charging?

Qi2.2 is the latest evolution of the Qi wireless standard. It incorporates a magnetic alignment system similar to MagSafe. This allows for faster, more efficient charging up to 25W.

Do I need a new charger for 25W Qi2.2?

Yes, you will need a charger specifically certified for the Qi2.2 standard. Older Qi or first-generation MagSafe chargers will not achieve these new 25W speeds with the iPhone 17.

Can the iPhone 16 use Qi2.2 charging?

No. While the iPhone 16 supports 25W MagSafe 2 charging, it lacks the hardware for Qi2.2. This new wireless standard is exclusive to the iPhone 17 series and newer Qi2.2-certified devices.

Why is the iPhone Air limited to 20W?

Apple has stated the limitation is due to the iPhone Air’s innovative, thin design. The thermal management system cannot handle the heat generated by 25W wireless charging safely.

When will Qi2.2 chargers be available?

Several accessory makers have already announced new Qi2.2 chargers. They are expected to become widely available in the coming weeks alongside the new iPhone 17 launch.
