Apple iPhone May Soon Support Third-Party Smartwatches

Apple is reportedly developing a new feature that could end the Apple Watch’s exclusive access to iPhone notifications. Code discovered in an early iOS 26.1 build hints at “Notification Forwarding.” This feature would allow alerts from an iPhone to be sent to other wearable devices.

    iPhone third-party watch support

This move could significantly improve the functionality of third-party smartwatches for iPhone users. It may also be a response to new regulatory pressures in the European Union.

Notification Forwarding: What the Code Reveals

According to analysis by Macworld, the code includes explicit strings describing the feature. One string states, “Choose which apps can send notifications to your accessory.” This suggests users will have granular control over which alerts get forwarded.

Another line clarifies that only one accessory can receive notifications at a time. It also notes that notifications will not appear on an Apple Watch while the feature is active. This confirms the system is designed for non-Apple devices.

The code also references a new “AccessoryExtension” framework. This technical backbone would manage the connection between the iPhone and the third-party wearable. It lays the groundwork for a seamless pairing experience.

A Shift Driven by Regulation and User Choice

This development appears closely linked to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). The DMA requires major tech companies, labeled “gatekeepers,” to open up their ecosystems. Apple is required to allow greater interoperability with competing hardware.

Making this feature global would be a significant shift in Apple’s strategy. It directly addresses a long-standing limitation for iPhone users who prefer other smartwatch brands. This could increase competition in the wearable market.

For consumers, it means more freedom of choice. An iPhone user could potentially use a Garmin, Samsung, or Fitbit watch with full notification support. That’s a big deal for fitness enthusiasts and users invested in other ecosystems.

This potential change represents a major step toward a more open Apple ecosystem. The new iPhone third-party watch support would finally break down a key walled garden. We will learn more when iOS 26 is unveiled at WWDC in June.

    Dropping this nugget your way

    What is Notification Forwarding?

It is an unreleased iOS feature found in code. It would let your iPhone send notifications to a single non-Apple accessory, like a smartwatch. This functionality is currently exclusive to the Apple Watch.

When will this feature be available?

It was found in code for iOS 26.1. Apple will likely preview iOS 26 at its WWDC event in June. A public release would follow in September, with the .1 update coming later.

Will this work with any smartwatch?

Not automatically. Watch manufacturers will need to update their devices and apps to support the new Apple framework. Compatibility will depend on the smartwatch brand.

Is this because of new EU laws?

Yes, the EU’s Digital Markets Act is a major factor. It requires Apple to allow interoperability. The feature may launch in the EU first before expanding to other regions.

Will my Apple Watch still work?

Yes. The code indicates you can only forward notifications to one accessory at a time. If you enable it for a third-party watch, your Apple Watch will temporarily stop receiving notifications.
