Brock Purdy did not practice on Wednesday due to a lingering turf toe injury, putting his availability for Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in doubt. Head coach Kyle Shanahan affirmed that no decision has been made to place him on Injured Reserve.
Purdy has already missed three of five games this season with the toe issue. He attempted a comeback in the loss versus Jacksonville, only to aggravate the injury and sit out the Rams game. Shanahan maintains the team is treating his status as week to week.
Backup Plans and Injury Layering in San Francisco
Backup Mac Jones, who has recorded a 3–0 record as starter this season, also dealt with health concerns Wednesday. He was limited in practice while managing a left knee injury and a newly reported oblique issue sustained in last week’s game.
If both Purdy and Jones are unavailable, rookie Adrian Martinez—recently promoted from the practice squad—would step in. Martinez has yet to take a snap in regular season play but is next in line in the 49ers’ depth chart.
The injury situation for the 49ers extends beyond quarterback. Several key offensive skill players missed Wednesday’s practice, including receivers Ricky Pearsall and Jauan Jennings. Tight end George Kittle, currently on IR, may return next week.
What This Means on Game Day
Given Purdy’s lack of practice and recent setbacks, many expect Mac Jones to get the start unless his injuries worsen. With Jones having posted strong results so far, the 49ers might lean into continuity if feasible.
However, if Jones can’t go, the team could be forced to rely heavily on Martinez in a high-stakes road matchup. The coaching staff’s focus will be on limiting negative plays and relying on defense and the run game to stay competitive.
As of now, Brock Purdy’s status for Week 6 remains uncertain. The 49ers will make a final call after Friday’s practice, but all signs point toward a possible absence and continued reliance on the backup quarterback room.
