A powerful earthquake struck off northern Japan on Monday night. The initial magnitude was reported as 7.6. It caused significant shaking and prompted tsunami warnings.

Japan earthquake

The tremor injured at least 30 people and left thousands without power. Dramatic videos from inside a newsroom showed violent shaking and flying objects, capturing the event’s intensity.

Immediate Impact and Viral Footage Show Chaos

The quake hit at 11:15 PM local time on Monday. Its epicenter was off the coast of the Aomori region. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the magnitude was later revised to 7.5.

A tsunami warning was issued for waves up to three meters high. The highest waves recorded reached about 70 centimeters. The warnings were lifted after several hours.

The quake caused visible damage across affected areas. Roads were cracked and broken glass littered streets. One car was seen trapped in a hole caused by the tremor.

A viral video from the office of ABA Aomori Broadcasting showed the moment it hit. The one-minute clip showed walls shaking violently. Papers flew off desks as equipment rattled.

Emergency Response and Infrastructure Disruption

Nearly 28,000 residents were advised to evacuate their homes. Emergency shelters reportedly filled quickly in some areas. Freezing temperatures complicated the overnight response.

Power outages initially affected about 2,700 homes in Aomori. Service was largely restored within hours. Bullet train services were suspended for safety checks.

Officials confirmed no abnormalities at nearby nuclear power plants. This includes the Higashidori and Onagawa facilities. Operator Tohoku Electric Power reported all systems were stable.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi urged continued caution. She advised residents to stay informed for about a week. People were told to secure furniture and prepare for possible aftershocks.

The Japan earthquake serves as a stark reminder of the region’s seismic vulnerability. Authorities continue to assess the full scope of the damage while urging preparedness for potential aftershocks in the coming days.
