Interest from FC Barcelona in Julián Álvarez has lingered for months, even as Atlético Madrid maintain publicly that the forward is not available. The situation has produced a steady flow of speculation since the closing weeks of last season, though the practical hurdles to any transfer remain considerable.

Reports in Spain suggest Barcelona have identified Álvarez as a long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski and have discussed setting aside around €100 million to bring in a new striker this summer. Whether that figure would be sufficient is another matter entirely.
Atlético’s leadership has repeatedly indicated that the Argentine remains central to their plans. The club invested heavily to bring him to the Spanish capital last summer, and the expectation internally has been that he would form part of the team’s core for years rather than months.
Even so, the conversation has not faded. Over the past year, occasional suggestions have appeared in the Spanish press that Álvarez might be open to considering a future move, though his representatives have pushed back against claims of active negotiations. His agent has denied talks with Barcelona twice this year.
The subject resurfaced again on Friday when Atlético manager Diego Simeone was asked about the player’s future. Simeone criticised the repeated focus on transfer talk surrounding his forward, particularly after Álvarez declined to explicitly confirm he would still be at the club next summer. The player did, however, state that he is currently happy playing at the Cívitas Metropolitano.
Behind the scenes, Atlético’s position appears firm at the executive level. Chief executive Miguel Ángel Gil Marín is reported to have no intention of selling the striker and was among those who supported the significant investment made to secure his signing.
According to Spanish broadcaster Cadena SER, however, there are differing views within the wider hierarchy. Some influential figures inside the club are said to believe a substantial offer could be considered if it allowed Atlético to reinforce other areas of the squad.
Even under that scenario, Barcelona’s chances appear uncertain. Atlético would likely demand a fee beyond the figure Barcelona are believed to be working with, and there may be little appetite in Madrid to strengthen a domestic rival.
Interest from England has also been mentioned, particularly from Arsenal FC. For Atlético, a sale to the Premier League would carry fewer competitive implications than a move within Spain, while English clubs often operate with greater financial flexibility.
Financial pressure on Atlético is also less pronounced than in previous years following investment linked to Apollo Sports Capital. That backing has eased concerns about needing to generate income through major player sales.

For now, the situation remains largely unchanged. Barcelona’s admiration for Álvarez has not diminished, but Atlético’s official stance has held firm, leaving the discussion hovering between interest and reality as the summer window approaches.
