In a heartfelt Instagram post, pop superstar Justin Timberlake revealed that he has been diagnosed with Lyme disease—a serious tick-borne illness that has affected millions across the United States. Timberlake, 44, opened up about the physical and mental toll the disease has taken on him, particularly while touring for his latest album Everything I Thought It Was.
“I’ve been battling some health issues, and was diagnosed with Lyme disease – which I don’t say so you feel bad for me – but to shed some light on what I’ve been up against behind the scenes,” Timberlake wrote.
He continued, “If you’ve experienced this disease or know someone who has – then you’re aware: living with this can be relentlessly debilitating, both mentally and physically. When I first got the diagnosis I was shocked for sure. But, at least I could understand why I would be on stage and in a massive amount of nerve pain or, just feeling crazy fatigue or sickness.”
Timberlake’s admission comes after months of public speculation about his health. Fans had noticed signs of fatigue and reduced energy in performances during his ongoing Forget Tomorrow World Tour, which launched in April 2024. Some even voiced criticism on social media, questioning the quality of his shows.
Despite these challenges, Timberlake chose to persevere, explaining: “I was faced with a personal decision. Stop touring? Or, keep going and figure it out. I decided the joy that performing brings me far outweighs the fleeting stress my body was feeling. I’m so glad I kept going.”
Timberlake also shared that choosing to perform despite his illness became a source of mental strength: “Not only did I prove my mental tenacity to myself, but I now have so many special moments with all of you that I will never forget.”
The announcement was met with overwhelming support from fans. One commented, “You are so loved, and we’ll be here supporting whatever you decide to do next,” while another said, “Justin you are so appreciated. Take care of yourself. We love you and will continue to ride for you.”
According to Billboard, the Forget Tomorrow tour has been a financial success, pushing Timberlake to the 10th position on Billboard’s midyear Boxscore list, with $73.2 million in revenue generated from 41 shows as of late May.
Lyme disease, caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, is typically spread by blacklegged ticks. Early symptoms often include a rash, fever, chills, fatigue, and muscle aches. Without timely treatment, it can lead to severe joint, heart, and neurological issues and may persist for months or even years.
Other music celebrities, including Avril Lavigne, Justin Bieber, and Shania Twain, have also shared their own battles with Lyme disease in recent years, raising awareness of the disease’s impact.
Experts warn that Lyme disease cases are increasing in the US, with climate change playing a significant role. Warmer temperatures and longer summers have created favorable conditions for ticks to thrive. In fact, CDC data reports that May and June 2025 saw the highest emergency room visits for tick bites since 2019.
Timberlake, who first rose to fame as a member of the boy band NSYNC and has since become a solo artist with multiple Grammy wins, has promised to be more open about his health challenges moving forward. “I was always raised to keep something like this to yourself,” he said, “but I am trying to be more transparent about my struggles so that they aren’t misinterpreted.”
