At least 15 people died in a tragic funicular accident in Lisbon on September 3, 2025. The crash involved the historic Elevador da Gloria, a popular tourist tram.

The incident happened around 6pm local time, during evening rush hour. Emergency crews rushed to the scene as the funicular derailed and slammed into a building.

Loose Cable Confirmed as Main Cause of Lisbon Funicular Crash

Authorities confirmed that a loose cable caused the Elevador da Gloria to lose control. The car shot down the hill before crashing into a nearby structure.

Officials from Lisbon’s Firefighters Regiment provided the early findings. According to their report, the cable failed while the funicular was mid-journey. The system, which uses two cars and a counterweight cable, could not stop in time.

The upper carriage suffered the most damage. Footage showed the yellow tram crushed against a building. Passengers scrambled out of windows, while rescuers pulled others from the wreckage.

Eighteen people were injured. Some were critically hurt. Among the victims were foreign tourists, though their nationalities are still unconfirmed.

Mayor Carlos Moedas called the event a tragedy. “Lisbon is in mourning,” he said. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also expressed condolences and urged a full investigation.

Deadliest Crash in Lisbon’s Recent Transport History

This is one of Lisbon’s worst transport accidents in recent years. The Elevador da Gloria is more than 100 years old. It first opened in 1885 and links Baixa with Bairro Alto.

The funicular is operated by Carris, the city’s public transport company. It is a major tourist draw, offering scenic views of the capital.

Summer months bring thousands of visitors to Lisbon. Narrow streets and steep hills make these trams both useful and iconic. But the crash has raised new safety concerns.

Firefighters worked through the night to clear debris and secure the area. Lisbon police have now opened a formal investigation into the mechanical failure.

This tragic crash involving Lisbon’s iconic funicular was caused by a loose cable. Safety upgrades may be needed to prevent another disaster.
