A Connecticut Lottery player from Simsbury has won a $1 million Powerball prize just one day before his birthday. The man, aged 60, matched five white balls in the August 30 drawing and claimed his prize on Thursday, according to Connecticut Lottery officials.
The winning ticket was purchased at Pride on Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury. The winner said in a statement that he was stunned when he scanned the ticket. “It was hard to keep a straight face when I scanned the ticket at the store. It was pure luck,” he said. The Powerball odds of winning $1 million are 1 in 11,688,054, Connecticut Lottery reported.
Connecticut Powerball Winners Celebrate Big Prizes
The Simsbury man, a regular lottery player, said he has no immediate plans for how to spend the winnings but intends to continue playing. He joined a growing list of Connecticut residents who have recently struck gold in the Powerball and Mega Millions games.
On the same day, a Waterbury resident also celebrated a win. The player purchased a Powerball quick pick ticket at Super Wines & Liquors on West Main Street in Cheshire and matched four numbers plus the Powerball, earning a $50,000 prize. He told officials he felt confident while buying the ticket and planned to enjoy the winnings, save part of the money, and use some for home renovations.
The winning numbers for the October 23 drawing were 18, 37, 52, 54, and 60, with a Powerball of 12. The Waterbury winner had a 1 in 913,130 chance of winning the $50,000 prize.
Powerball Jackpot Continues to Rise
According to Connecticut Lottery, a separate $1 million Powerball prize from a September 22 drawing remains unclaimed. The ticket was purchased at a Citgo station in Kensington, and the winner has 180 days from the drawing date to claim the prize.
Currently, the Powerball jackpot has climbed to an estimated $344 million, with a cash option of $163.7 million. The next drawing is scheduled for Saturday night at 10:59 p.m. EST. Drawings are held every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday.
Connecticut Lottery officials reminded players that prizes of $50,000 or higher must be claimed in person at the organization’s headquarters in Wallingford. Winners are encouraged to sign their tickets immediately and check them carefully before discarding.
With millions at stake, Connecticut continues to see luck strike twice in one week — and for one player, the timing couldn’t have been better, arriving just before his birthday celebration.
