A new national report ranks Maryland as a top state for youth mental health support. The analysis by teletherapy agency VocoVision places the state fourth nationwide for the 2025-26 school year. This ranking highlights Maryland’s significant investment in student wellness programs.

While a national care gap persists, Maryland’s system is a notable exception. The state’s proactive policies are providing a crucial safety net for its younger population.

Maryland Leads in Youth Mental Health Care Access

According to the VocoVision study, 54% of Maryland youths in crisis received necessary care. This figure is the seventh highest rate in the United States. It also far exceeds the troubling national average of just 44.3%.

The state also excels in school-based support. Maryland employs 7% more school counselors than its projected demand requires. This surplus ranks the state 13th nationally for counselor availability.

Access to clinical providers is another strong point. Maryland has one mental health provider for every 335 people. This ratio places it 20th in the country, ensuring better access to professional help.

    National Rankings and Broader Impact

The report combines data from multiple federal agencies to create its index. Connecticut, Illinois, and Massachusetts claimed the top three spots. Maryland’s fourth-place finish puts it ahead of states like Rhode Island and New York.

This strong performance has a direct impact on students’ lives. Easier access to care can dramatically improve academic and personal outcomes. It helps children build resilience and succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

States at the bottom of the list face significant challenges. They often have severe provider shortages and larger rural student populations. This creates a substantial barrier to receiving timely and effective care.

Maryland’s investment in youth mental health care is yielding significant returns. Its high national ranking demonstrates a successful model for other states to follow. Ensuring students have robust support systems remains a critical priority for the future.

    Info at your fingertips

Why did Maryland rank so highly for youth mental health?

Maryland ranked highly due to its above-average care access rate and school counselor surplus. The state’s provider-to-resident ratio also contributed significantly to its strong score. These factors combined to create a supportive environment for students.

What is the national average for youth mental health care?

Nationally, only 44.3% of youths who experience a major depressive episode receive care. This means more than half of children in crisis do not get the help they need. The gap highlights a widespread systemic challenge across the country.

Which states were ranked in the top three?

Connecticut was ranked first for youth mental health support. Illinois and Massachusetts followed closely, taking second and third place respectively. These states also showed strong metrics in care access and provider availability.

How does rural population affect a state’s ranking?

States with larger rural populations often face greater challenges. Remote areas typically have fewer mental health providers and resources available. This limited access can lower a state’s overall ranking in such reports.
