Minnesota Vikings quarterback Carson Wentz addressed his mistakes against the Steelers after a tough 24-21 defeat in Dublin, Ireland, on Sunday, September 28, 2025. Wentz was sacked six times and threw two interceptions as the Vikings fell short in the NFL’s first-ever game played in Ireland.
Wentz completed 30 of 46 passes for 350 yards and two touchdowns but admitted frustration over missed opportunities. “At the end of the day, we lost. That’s all I care about. Got a bad taste in my mouth,” Wentz told reporters after the game.
Carson Wentz Breaks Down His Mistakes Against Steelers
The Vikings started strong with an 11-play, 51-yard opening drive that ended with a 41-yard Will Reichard field goal. Wentz connected five times with star wide receiver Justin Jefferson early but took a costly third-down sack that ended the drive. Minnesota then punted on the next series and suffered Wentz’s first interception as the Steelers took a 14-3 lead.
Before halftime, Wentz managed to move the offense for another Reichard field goal to make it 14-6. However, the third quarter saw more struggles. Two quick three-and-out drives stalled momentum, and Wentz threw another interception, nearly losing a fumble on the same possession.
Down 24-6 in the fourth quarter, Wentz finally found rhythm. He led a nine-play, 70-yard touchdown drive capped by a 16-yard pass to rookie Zavier Scott. Minutes later, he engineered a 99-yard scoring drive, ending with a two-yard touchdown to Jalen Nailor. Despite the late comeback, the Vikings ran out of time.
“Couple of tipped picks … those are tough,” Wentz said. “There’s definitely times I could have gotten rid of the ball quicker and gone through my progressions faster.”
Vikings’ Struggles Highlighted by Weak Run Game and Heavy Pressure
Wentz had little help from the running game. Minnesota managed just 70 rushing yards on 20 carries, with Jordan Mason posting 57 yards on 16 attempts. The offensive line struggled against Pittsburgh’s aggressive pass rush, led by T.J. Watt.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell admitted the offense fell into predictable passing situations. “As you stack some of those negative plays, you end up in down and distances very conducive for them. Eventually the score was very conducive for them too,” O’Connell said.
Wentz is expected to remain the starter next Sunday when the Vikings face the Cleveland Browns in London, as rookie J.J. McCarthy continues to recover from an ankle injury.
Wentz’s mistakes against the Steelers will be a key storyline as Minnesota tries to rebound overseas. The veteran quarterback says he must adjust faster and protect the ball better in critical situations.
