The medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders has been ordered to cease operations in Libya. The group, known globally as MSF, must leave the country by November 9. This directive was delivered in a letter from the Libyan foreign ministry.

    MSF expelled Libya

According to Reuters, no official reason was provided for the expulsion. MSF had already suspended its activities in the country back in March following a separate security incident.

Aid Group’s Work and Recent Challenges

MSF has played a critical role in Libya’s healthcare system. The organization reported carrying out over 15,000 medical consultations last year in collaboration with Libyan health authorities. It also provided emergency aid after the devastating Derna floods in 2023.

The group’s work has recently faced significant obstruction. In March, its premises were closed by Libya’s Internal Security Agency. Several staff members were reportedly interrogated at that time.

This latest order to leave entirely deepens the crisis for humanitarian work. MSF’s registration with the UN-recognized government in Tripoli remains technically valid. The organization expressed hope for a positive resolution.

    Broader Impact on Humanitarian Access

The expulsion signals a worsening environment for aid groups in Libya. MSF stated this wave of repression has affected at least nine other humanitarian organizations in western Libya. This creates a severe gap in medical care for vulnerable populations.

Refugees and migrants are particularly affected by this decision. MSF was a key provider of healthcare for people who are often excluded from the public health system. The group warned that no international NGOs now provide them medical care in western Libya.

The expulsion of MSF from Libya represents a severe blow to an already fragile humanitarian landscape, leaving thousands without critical medical support.

The group provided thousands of medical consultations and supported the health system. They also focused on tuberculosis treatment and healthcare for refugees and migrants.

When does MSF have to leave?

The organization has been given a deadline of November 9 to completely depart from the country. This follows a suspension of its activities since March.
