INTERNATIONAL DESK: Mumbai, India’s financial capital, has added another feather to its cap.A survey by Time Out has rated Mumbai as one of 19 cities with the best public transport in the world. Though it featured at 19th place in the list of 19 cities, Mumbai is the only Indian city to feature in the list.
To identify the cities with the world’s greatest public transport, Time Out surveyed more than 20,000 city-dwellers around the world.
“We asked simply: is it easy to get around your city by public transport? And in the cities featured below, at least four out of five locals had good things to say about their city’s public transportation network,” Time Out said in a report.
Notably, many iconic networks including Istanbul, Lisbon, Melbourne, Manchester, or Bangkok made it to the list despite having iconic public transit system.
On Mumbai’s public transit system, Time Out said: “It’s an experience and a half, although probably one best avoided at rush hour unless you are a veteran of such scenes. Still, 81 percent of locals say it’s easy to cross Mumbai by public transport, and the system certainly keeps the metropolis moving, with millions using the city’s buses, rickshaws, metro and taxis on a daily basis.”
The Time Out report said that Mumbai has introduced an app called Chalo Pay which made travelling in the city a bit easier.
“The city has also introduced the Chalo Pay app – a pioneer for Indian public transport – making the whole thing just that little bit easier. Download the M-indicator app to stay on top of schighhedules, and let Mumbai unfold in front of you,” the report said.
Mumbai, which is known for its local trains, has last year also introduced double-decker electric buses. (ET)
