Violent protests have engulfed Nepal’s capital. A youth-led movement against government overreach has descended into chaos. At least 19 people were killed in Kathmandu this week.

Nepal Gen Z protests

Former Prime Ministers were attacked and homes were set ablaze. The unrest continues despite the Prime Minister’s resignation.

Political Leaders Targeted in Widespread Violence

Protesters targeted high-profile political figures directly. A mob assaulted five-time Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and his wife. Video evidence shows both bleeding as they were helped to safety.

Another mob set fire to the home of former PM Jhala Nath Khanal. His wife, Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar, was reportedly trapped inside. Local media, including Khabarhub, reported she later died from severe burn injuries.

Nepali authorities have not officially confirmed her death. The reports highlight the extreme danger of the situation. Security forces struggled to contain the angry crowds.

Underlying Causes of the Gen Z Fury in Nepal

The initial spark was a government ban on social media. Platforms like Facebook and YouTube were blocked for failing to register. This action ignited deep-seated anger among the country’s youth.

The movement reflects a broader frustration with political corruption. Many young Nepalis accuse leaders’ children of enjoying privileged lives. They feel left behind in a struggling economy.

Youth unemployment is a critical issue. The World Bank estimates it was around 20% last year. Over 2,000 young people leave Nepal daily to seek work abroad.

Nepal’s Leadership Appeals for Calm After Resignation

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned in an attempt to quell the unrest. His resignation was accepted by President Ram Chandra Poudel. Oli will lead a caretaker government until a new one forms.

The President has publicly appealed for a peaceful resolution. He asked protesters to stop the escalation of violence. The Nepali Army and security agencies also jointly called for restraint and dialogue.

The Nepal Gen Z protests reveal a deep generational rift. Economic despair and political distrust have fueled this explosive situation. The path to stability remains uncertain.
