Nor’easter Weather Forecast NJ: Heavy Rain, 60 mph Winds and Coastal Flood Threats Hit Tri-State

A powerful nor’easter has arrived in New Jersey and the greater New York City area, bringing damaging winds, heavy rain, and a significant risk of coastal flooding through Monday night. The storm, which moved into the region Sunday afternoon, is expected to linger into early Tuesday, with officials warning residents to prepare for dangerous conditions.

New Jersey, New York City, and nearby counties are all under a state of emergency as the slow-moving coastal storm intensifies. Governor Kathy Hochul urged residents to stay alert and follow local forecasts, stressing the importance of safety precautions amid “high wind warnings and flood risks.”

Severe Nor’easter Conditions Sweep Across NJ and NYC

The nor’easter began impacting the Tri-State area around 3 p.m. Sunday and is forecast to last through roughly 9 p.m. Monday. Forecasters expect the most severe impacts along coastal areas, where sustained winds of 40–60 mph and rainfall totals of 1–3 inches — with locally higher amounts — are likely. These conditions will drive moderate to major coastal flooding and cause substantial beach erosion.

By Sunday night, the storm was stalling offshore along the Mid-Atlantic coast, funneling bands of heavy rain inland from east to west. Meteorologists warn that the heaviest downpours and strongest wind gusts will occur overnight into Monday morning. Rain will continue throughout Monday, with occasional lulls, and taper off gradually by Monday night as the system drifts eastward. Light showers could linger into early Tuesday.

Temperatures will remain steady, with lows in the mid-50s Sunday night and highs in the low 60s on Monday. However, the biggest concern remains the strong winds combined with fully leafed-out trees, which heighten the risk of toppled trees, property damage, and widespread power outages.

Major Coastal Flooding and Wind Damage Risks

Officials warn that the prolonged nature of this nor’easter will result in elevated tides and multiple high tide cycles, leading to several rounds of coastal flooding. Water levels could rise by as much as 3 feet in vulnerable areas, with significant beach erosion expected. Inland areas will also experience gusty winds, though the most severe impacts are expected closer to the shoreline.

The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Warning for eastern sections of Monmouth, Ocean, and Suffolk counties through Monday afternoon. A Wind Advisory is in effect for parts of coastal Fairfield, Westchester, Essex, Union, the Bronx, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Nassau County, and western Suffolk, Monmouth, and Ocean counties. Additionally, a Coastal Flood Warning is active for all coastal zones in the region through Monday evening, while coastal Fairfield County is under a Coastal Flood Advisory.

While flash flooding from rainfall is less likely due to the prolonged nature of the precipitation, forecasters caution that localized freshwater flooding is still possible, particularly in low-lying areas. The region’s recent dry weather may help reduce the risk of widespread flash flooding.

What This Nor’easter Means for the Tri-State Region

This October nor’easter is one of the most significant storms to hit the region this fall, with impacts expected across transportation, power infrastructure, and coastal communities. Fallen trees and power outages could disrupt travel and daily routines, while coastal flooding threatens homes, businesses, and transportation routes near the water.

Officials urge residents to secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel during peak winds and rain, and heed evacuation orders if issued for flood-prone areas. Motorists should also be cautious of ponding on roadways and avoid driving through flooded streets.

The nor’easter weather forecast for NJ and the surrounding Tri-State region underscores the importance of preparation. With strong winds, heavy rain, and coastal flooding expected to continue into Monday night, residents are urged to remain vigilant and monitor local updates until the storm fully clears.
