A suspect in the deadly Palisades Fire is being moved to California from Florida. Jonathan Rinderknecht was arrested last week in central Florida. A federal grand jury has now indicted him on arson charges.

His transfer was ordered on Thursday. This development follows a months-long investigation into the blaze that killed over a dozen people.

Legal Proceedings Advance with Grand Jury Indictment

The scheduled court hearing in Orlando for Friday was canceled. According to federal prosecutors, Rinderknecht’s next appearance will be an arraignment in Los Angeles. This will happen in the coming weeks.

A grand jury in Southern California returned the indictment. It includes one count of destruction of property by fire. He also faces charges of arson affecting interstate commerce and timber set afire.

Rinderknecht was deemed a flight risk. A magistrate judge ordered him held in federal custody last week. The judge cited concerns about his mental health and ability to travel to California for court.

Months of Investigation Led to Arrest

Federal officials state Rinderknecht started a small fire on New Year’s Day. This fire smoldered underground for nearly a week. It then reignited on January 7, roaring through Pacific Palisades and Malibu.

The fire was one of two major blazes that day. Together, they killed more than 30 people in Los Angeles County. They also destroyed over 17,000 homes and buildings.

Authorities first interviewed Rinderknecht on January 24. Investigators spent months ruling out other causes like fireworks or lightning. They also combed through his phone data to track his whereabouts when the fire began.

The extradition of the Palisades Fire suspect marks a critical step toward justice for the victims. Federal authorities are now preparing their case as the legal process moves to California, where the devastating impact of the fire is most deeply felt.
