Peru’s Political Crisis Deepens as Gen Z Protests Turn Deadly

Peru’s new president, José Jerí, is refusing to resign after a massive protest turned violent in Lima. At least one person was killed and dozens more were injured during the demonstration. The unrest was largely driven by young Peruvians demanding change.

Peru protests

The situation highlights the severe political instability gripping the nation. According to Reuters, the country has seen seven presidents in less than a decade.

Violence Erupts in Capital Streets

The protests escalated dramatically on Thursday. A 32-year-old hip-hop singer, Eduardo Ruíz, was shot and killed during the clashes.

Peru’s prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into his death. They are treating the incident as a serious human rights violation.

Security camera footage showed a man firing a shot while fleeing from protesters. Witnesses claimed the shooter was a plainclothes police officer.

Injuries were widespread. The Ombudsman’s Office reported at least 24 protesters and 80 police officers were hurt.

Several journalists were also assaulted or struck by pellets. The National Association of Journalists condemned the attacks on the press.

A Global Wave of Youth-Led Discontent

The protests in Peru are part of a broader international trend. Young people in many countries are expressing anger at their governments.

Similar movements have emerged in Kenya, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Many of these protests use symbols from popular culture, like the “One Piece” anime, for unity.

In Lima, a 27-year-old electrician said he learned about the protest on TikTok. He expressed deep frustration with corruption and violence from authorities.

This sentiment echoes the anger from 2022 protests. Those earlier demonstrations resulted in 50 deaths after a government crackdown.

Controversy Surrounds New Leadership

President Jerí took office just days ago after Congress ousted his predecessor, Dina Boluarte. Boluarte was deeply unpopular for her handling of previous unrest.

Jerí, the 38-year-old former head of Congress, promised to tackle crime. He appointed an ultraconservative former judge as his prime minister.

His administration is already facing severe criticism. Jerí was previously investigated over a rape accusation, though the case was dismissed.

Protesters also condemn his legislative record. They say he voted for laws that weaken the fight against organized crime.

During the protests, women chanted “The rapist is Jerí.” Police responded to fireworks with tear gas and rubber pellets.

The political future of Peru remains highly uncertain. The persistent Gen Z protests signal a deep and enduring crisis. The nation’s stability hangs in the balance as its young people demand a new direction.
