ZOOMBANGLA DESK: President M Abdul Hamid today received credentials of newly appointed ambassador of the United States of America (USA) in Dhaka Peter D. Haas at a function after he was ceremonially welcomed at Bangabhaban here.
Welcoming the new ambassador at Bangabhaban, the President said Bangladesh’s ties with the USA are very excellent and beyond the boundaries of this excellent relationship, diplomatic ties as well as trade and commerce have expanded in various fields at present.
President’s Press Secretary Md Joynal Abedin told BSS that the president thanked the USA and its people for their support and cooperation on the Rohingya issue, expressing the hope that this support would continue in days to come.
Abdul Hamid also called for putting continued US pressure on the Myanmar government to ensure the safe return of Rohingya nationals to their homeland with dignity.
The head of the state also thanked the US government for its support in various ways, including providing vaccines to Bangladesh in the fight against COVID-19.
Referring to a very conducive trade and commerce environment here, the President called for more US investment in Bangladesh.
President Hamid, the Bangabhaban spokesman, said he assured the ambassador of their full support in fulfilling their responsibilities in Dhaka to further strengthen Bangladesh’s relationship with the United States.
Earlier on his arrival at Bangabhaban, a contingent of the horse-mounted President Guard Regiment (PGR) offered the envoy honour guards as part of ceremony.
The national anthems of the respective countries were also played by the army band and the ambassador made a round of inspection of the guards of honour.
Later, newly appointed High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Maldives Rear Admiral SM Abul Kalam Azad paid a courtesy call on President Hamid this evening.
The President said, during the meeting, the exchange of high-level visits between the two countries in recent times has opened a new chapter in the bilateral relations between the two countries.
He advised the High Commissioner to use this opportunity to work for further cooperation in the development of trade and investment between the two countries, asking the high commissioner to work for the welfare of the expatriate Bangladeshis staying in the Maldives.
