Public Unity Brings Peace to Nikunja : Three Months of Auto-Free Success

Nikunja, one of Dhaka’s prominent residential areas under Khilkhet Police Station, has completed three months without the presence of battery-powered auto-rickshaws. On April 30, 2025, residents, through a united and conscious effort, successfully imposed a permanent ban on these vehicles across the entire locality. The result: a peaceful, orderly environment that residents say was long overdue.

Since the ban, locals report significant improvements—reduced noise pollution, safer streets for pedestrians, and an overall sense of calm. “We can finally walk without fear or noise,” said a long-time resident. Parents, children, and the elderly are now enjoying a more livable neighborhood.

However, concern has recently resurfaced. A group allegedly backed by a particular political party is reportedly plotting to reintroduce battery auto-rickshaws in the area for financial gain. Locals fear this move could undermine the hard-earned peace and are calling for immediate attention from law enforcement.

In response, Journalist Jahid Ikbal, Convener of the Khilkhet Tanpara Welfare Society, has submitted a formal letter of notification to the Officer-in-Charge of Khilkhet Police Station. In the letter, he warned of the emerging conspiracy and urged police authorities to take necessary precautions to prevent unrest.

“Nikunja’s peace was restored through unity and determination. We will not allow any group to hijack that progress under the shadow of politics,” said Ikbal.

The Khilkhet Police reportedly acknowledged the issue and assured that it is under active monitoring. They also reaffirmed their commitment to preserving peace and public safety in the area.

Residents remain firm in their position. “We acted once to protect our community, and we’re ready to do it again if needed,” a community member stated.

The message from Nikunja is clear: the streets belong to the people, not to profit-driven chaos. Peace will prevail.
