Randy Quaid attacks Anne Hathaway casting in Days of Thunder sequel

By Bhuiyan Md TomalSeptember 1, 20262 Mins Read

Randy Quaid is back in the entertainment news cycle after criticising Anne Hathaway’s casting in the announced Days of Thunder sequel. Variety reported that the actor, who appeared in the 1990 original, objected to the new pairing with Tom Cruise. The Daily Beast also reported on the social-media posts that drew attention to the dispute.

Quaid played team owner Tim Daland in the original film, which starred Cruise as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle. His connection to the first movie explains why his comments became a headline, but it does not give him control over the sequel’s casting or production decisions.

The sequel’s confirmed project details come from reporting around Paramount’s announcement: Anne Hathaway has joined Cruise, and the film has a June 2028 theatrical date. Variety described the new film as a follow-up to the racing drama nearly four decades after the original.

Quaid’s criticism focused on the choice of Hathaway and his preference for Nicole Kidman, who played the original film’s romantic lead. The comments are his personal view, not a statement from Paramount, Cruise or Hathaway. Neither the actor’s criticism nor the online reaction establishes how the finished screenplay will treat the original relationships.

The episode shows how older franchises create a second public conversation beyond the official announcement. A sequel can attract attention through its release date and cast, but it can also reopen arguments about continuity, nostalgia and whether a new film should reproduce the choices of its predecessor.

The first Days of Thunder earned $157.9 million worldwide, according to the Los Angeles Times’ report on the sequel. That historical figure provides context for the original’s footprint, yet box-office performance from 1990 cannot predict the result of a 2028 release in a very different theatrical market.

The fact-based update is that Quaid criticised the casting and the comments were widely reported. The sequel remains an announced Paramount project led by Cruise and Hathaway, with a 2028 release date. Casting debates may continue, but they should be reported as reactions rather than treated as evidence that production plans have changed.
