Reliance Industries to Invest ₹98,000 Crore in Andhra Pradesh Data Centers

By Saumya SarakarJuly 23, 20263 Mins Read

Reliance Industries, through joint venture Digital Connexion, announced a ₹98,000 crore (USD 11 billion) investment to build 1 Gigawatt of data center capacity in Andhra Pradesh by 2030. The MoU was signed with the Andhra Pradesh Economic Development Board, committing to develop AI-native, purpose-built facilities across 400 acres in Visakhapatnam.

Digital Connexion is a collaboration between Reliance, Canadian infrastructure giant Brookfield, and US-based Digital Realty. The project positions India as a regional hub for AI compute infrastructure, addressing the continent’s growing demand for generative AI training and inference workloads.

Strategic Importance for India’s AI Future

India’s cloud infrastructure has lagged behind the US and Southeast Asia. Hyperscalers like AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure built data center capacity in India over the past decade, but their resources focus on general-purpose cloud services. Reliance’s dedicated AI-native facilities aim to serve local startups and enterprises running large language models and other compute-intensive AI applications.

Visakhapatnam was chosen for its proximity to ports, existing IT talent, and government support. The facility will include redundant power systems and cooling infrastructure optimized for modern GPUs and TPUs.

Competition for AI Infrastructure Dominance

Other Indian companies and foreign investors are racing to build similar capacity. ISRO, India’s space agency, operates data centers but at smaller scale. Private players like Yotta Data and STT Global announced expansions, though none have committed to Reliance’s scale. The ₹98,000 crore bet signals Mukesh Ambani’s confidence in India’s AI economy over the next five years.

Building 1GW of capacity requires not just real estate but also power supply, fiber connectivity, and skilled technicians. Andhra Pradesh offers incentives including land cost reductions and policy support from Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s pro-tech administration.

Implications for Indian Startups

Access to lower-cost, locally-run compute could accelerate India’s AI startup ecosystem. Training large models today costs millions because hyperscalers charge premium rates for GPU hours. Local capacity with competitive pricing might unlock new AI companies focused on problems uniquely relevant to India—agricultural tech, vernacular language models, and healthcare AI.

Reliance’s data center bet is less about serving global markets and more about building India’s sovereign AI stack. If executed well, it becomes the foundation other companies build on.

FYI (keeping you in the loop)

When will the Visakhapatnam facility be ready?

The full 1GW capacity is expected by 2030. Early-stage facilities should come online within 18-24 months.
