Rivian detailed ambitious new self-driving plans. The EV maker held its first “Autonomy & AI Day” event in Palo Alto, California. CEO RJ Scaringe outlined a path to advanced hands-free and eyes-off driving.

Rivian autonomous drivingThe roadmap signals Rivian’s intent to compete with Tesla and others. It includes new custom chips and lidar sensors. The technology will debut in its upcoming, more affordable R2 SUV.

Universal Hands-Free Driving Set for Major Expansion in 2026

Rivian announced a major expansion of its driver-assist software. It will cover over 3.5 million miles of roads in the USA and Canada. This “Universal Hands-Free” system will launch in early 2026.

The feature will work on second-generation R1 vehicles and the new R2. It will eventually function on surface streets, not just highways. Drivers will pay a one-time $2,500 fee or a $49.99 monthly subscription.

Scaringe described it as point-to-point navigation. You could get in at home and let the vehicle drive you to your destination. This is the first major step in their multi-phase plan.

From Eyes-Off Driving to a Future in RoboTaxis

The next phase involves allowing drivers to take their eyes off the road. This would enable activities like reading or using a phone. The final goal is a “personal L4” system that operates without human intervention in certain areas.

Crucially, this advanced functionality requires new hardware. Rivian revealed a custom 5nm processor built with Arm and TSMC. This powers a new “autonomy computer” capable of processing 5 billion pixels per second.

A lidar sensor at the top of the windshield will provide critical 3D data. Rivian executives stated this sensor-computer combo aims for “superhuman” perception. According to TechCrunch’s coverage, vehicles without this lidar hardware will not support eyes-off driving.

Rivian’s autonomous driving push represents a significant bet on its technological future. The company aims to transform personal transportation with its new hardware and software. This roadmap positions Rivian as a serious contender in the competitive self-driving race.

A quick knowledge drop for you

Q1: When will Rivian’s expanded hands-free driving be available?

Rivian plans to launch its “Universal Hands-Free” system in early 2026. It will initially cover over 3.5 million miles of roads in the U.S. and Canada. The feature will work on new R1 vehicles and the upcoming R2 SUV.

Q2: How much will Rivian’s autonomous driving features cost?

The expanded hands-free capability will have two payment options. Customers can pay a one-time fee of $2,500. Alternatively, they can choose a monthly subscription costing $49.99.

Q3: What is “personal L4” driving?

“Personal L4” refers to a high level of vehicle automation. It means the car can drive itself without human input in specific conditions. Rivian is targeting this capability for personally owned vehicles in the future.

Q4: Will all new Rivians have the hardware for full self-driving?

No, only vehicles equipped with a new lidar sensor and third-generation computer will support the most advanced features. Early versions of the R2 SUV shipping in early 2026 may not have this necessary hardware suite.

Q5: Is Rivian planning a ride-hail service like Waymo?

CEO RJ Scaringe hinted at future opportunities in the ride-share space. The company’s initial focus remains on personally owned vehicles. However, their developed technology could enable a competitive autonomous ride-hail service later.
